| PentecostalTheology.comMarc Jackson | No Daniel/vegan/blender/cream meal fasts please! |
Jason Strickland | 40 days back in 2009. Just water,God pulled me through. It has been hard to fast a long time ever since, don’t know why. |
Marc Jackson | Never done 40 They call it Leaders Fast – only leaders did it in the Bible. Been doing 30 once or twice per year. Some years 21. First time 30 in the heat of 1995 was a killer – dropped like 50lb in a month. It has been getting easier though through the years |
Ralph Parker | 21 days was the longest seeking God 6 the 8 hour a day . But Prayed and seek God alot of the time being in full time Evangelism . |
Marc Jackson | 21 day = 3 weeks They say it takes the human body 21 days to change a habit |
Ralph Parker | I am old fashioned . They taught us to seek God to have experience with God that would take us through . I see alot of Healing and people getting saved . Love seeing Jesus touch people . |
Leonard Harris | 6 days no food just water. I’m not bragging on me doing the fast. I am bragging on the results! |
Marc Jackson | Tell us about the results then What happened? Leonard |
Ralph Parker | It all about the Glory of the Lord ! His Glory only . So Glad he allows us to see him move . |
Mark Cronk | Three days first 24 no food or water, second and third day no food and just drank water. |
Shasten Marshall | 16 days without food. |
Louise Cummings | Three days I know for sure. But sometimes. I might eat one day after that. And then fast again. |
Paula Young | ,40 days but very hard to fast since rhen |
Paula Young | ‘ve also done 21 day fast |
Jeffry Woolston | Personal, private question. Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV)16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. |
Marc Jackson | Text you cited refers to present experience. Question was obviously about fasting in the past and its effect. If the way you use that verse is true, we would have never known about anyone in the Bible fasting |
Michael Upchurch | Did a 40 day fast in 2007. No solids, only liquids. Would make potato soup some nights and pick out the chunks. Was a time of maturity and birthing. A time of learning His character and His attributes. The sum of it was learning that it’s not about us; It’s about Him. When your prayers turn to conversation, you witness the devaluing of your desires, and the true value of knowing/doing His will. (Matthew 7:21-23)The greatest knowledge gained was recognizing His voice. You’re only aware of that when you’re no longer thinking of anything else during your quiet time, but focused on Him deep down in your spirit. And that only came for me while fasting. Did another 40 day the following year skipping breakfast lunch but had solid foods at night. And fasts can be fasting TV or other things that consume us and our free time. |
Marc Jackson | I havent been able to find any Bible verse proving any other type of Biblical fast but food and drink |
Michael Upchurch | you’re splitting hairs. If there is anything in your life which you have trouble laying down to spend time in prayer then that should be fasted for a time. It’s about disciplining yourself so that you’re not controlled by your lusts. Paul said to crucify the flesh. That is what you’re doing when you say no to the flesh for a period of time to allow the Lord to have prominence. There’s no scripture concerning smoking that I’m aware but it’s common sense to not draw toxins in to your body. Fasting things other than food or drink can bring great benefits if those things are controlling your life. I can’t believe you would disagree with that because it’s not food or drink. |
Michael Upchurch | In Isaiah 58:6-8 the Lord recites the fast he approves. I would like your take on that. Isn’t that laying down your own desires, or fasting from them, so that you might help others? |
Michael Upchurch | “”Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free And break every yoke? “Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry And bring the homeless poor into the house; When you see the naked, to cover him; And not to hide yourself from your own flesh? “Then your light will break out like the dawn, And your recovery will speedily spring forth; And your righteousness will go before you; The glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.â€â€â€Isaiah‬ â€58:6-8‬ â€NASB‬‬ |
Marc Jackson | not splitting hairs of course. Fasting was given by God as reversal of original sin which came through eating. No Bible verse calls for other type of fasting. Even Is 58 says to share your bread with the hungry – abstain from all food |
Michael Upchurch | So if you’re counselling someone who’s life is controlled by things they can’t lay down, things that take them away from Family and from quiet time with the Lord, wouldn’t you advise them to lay those things down for a season and instead devote yourselves to prayer and study? And wouldn’t you label that a fast? Or would assign a different adjective? I have counselled others for years and have used the word “fast†when guiding them in discipline. You would say I’m wrong? |
Marc Jackson | I dont know if you are wrong. Fating is fasting. That’s all |
Michael Upchurch | Fasting in the Hebrew meant to cover your mouth. Some people should cover their mouth and fast from smoking lol. I guess I’ll continue using the word. H6684 צו×Pronounced tsuwmA primitive root; to cover over (the mouth), that is, to fast:– X at all, fast.See Judges 20:26 |
Marc Jackson | The Hebrew verb sum [Wx] is the only one used to describe fasting as a religious exercise. It (and its cognate noun som [/x]) conveys the explicit meaning “to abstain from food” and thus occurs regularly as a technical religious term. |
John Palacios | 21 day |
David Scott | 21 days |
Marc Jackson | bro Michael someone told me once he fasted a pack of cigarettes #HELLO you wernt suppose to smoke them to start with |
Michael Upchurch | True Brother Troy!! |
Mark Cronk | I knew a guy who would give up drinking alcohol every year for lent. He was either Catholic or Lutheran. I would say it doesn’t count your not suppose to be drunk in the first place. |
Marc Jackson | I know many folks who try to give up their facebook addiction during lent but right after Easter they jump on it like a fat kid on buffet line (no punt intended) |

Luke Richardson | 7 days just water |
Christopher Noel Boggess | Two or three weeks only liquids |
Marc Jackson | Christopher I read your comments as 2-3 weeks only liquors |
Christopher Noel Boggess | I dont drink any more |
Larry Ray Talley | No nourishment Fast, only water and possibly diet soda: 3 Days. Several times and each time was followed by an answer. Basically, I simply did a water only Fast until I received an answer and each time, the answer came at the end of 3 days!! |
Marc Jackson | Larry soda especially diet soda is very very bad for you during long fasts. Apart from the sugar serge that your heart does not need it may give you Montezuma’s revenge BUT if you feel good oh well 🙂 |
Larry Ray Talley | Thanks. I’ll refrain in the future. |
Benjamin C Bratvogel | How long doesnt really matter, the results are what counts. Did you use the experiance to change something, gain gratitude, spiritual insights, visons…40 days can be very dangerous, your organs can shut down , you need proteins and fats to regulate hormones and insulins ….not to mention warmth, focus, brain functions….. |
Christopher Noel Boggess | The true fast is to break bondage |
Christopher Noel Boggess | And some demons can only be casted out by fasting |
Marc Jackson | True; check your verses on prayer + fasting |
Ricky Grimsley | In the niv? |
Link Hudson | Some Indonesian Christians will fast daylight hours food and water for an extended period of time. Pastors of churches will ask or require those in ministry positions-including ushers and Sunday school teachers to fast- sometimes during Rahmadan. |

Dennis Michael Donahue
Nothing we do changes God…All we do changes us
Varnel Watson
TRUE
Joe Absher
Fasting is what i believe the old puritans called a “means of grace” praying, Bible study, communion, etc. Disciplines that subdue the flesh and break down that old stubborn pride and self will
