| PentecostalTheology.comWHAT is the ASSEMBLIES of GOD position on SANCTIFICATION today? Do we still teach it in our schools and churches anymore?
The Assemblies of God (AG), officially the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, is a group of over 140 autonomous but loosely associated national groupings of churches which together form the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination

I remember struggling with sanctification and getting a good understanding of it. I asked as many older ministers as I could and not only did I get different answers from each of them, when the did explain it the didn’t seem to have a confident grasp of it
Brody Pope [12/17/2015 10:06 AM]
I see it as a second work of grace.
John Conger [12/17/2015 10:49 AM]
Typically my understanding was that COG saw it as a definitive work with the person progressing afterwards and AOG saw it as a progressive work. I’ve come to believe it is a triune work. Santification of spirit at salvation (spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are the children of God), Santification of soul subsequent to salvation (renewing of the mind etc) and lastly sanctification (redemption) of body at resurrection.
Brody Pope [12/17/2015 1:10 PM]
I see it as a whole event happening at once and wholly. But I don’t see it at the moment of salvation, I see it as a second work of grace.

I understand. That’s how I was taught. What do you believe happens then and what is the result?

regrettably many/most Pentecostals dont know sanctification from a hole in the wall

Any insight Terry Wiles

I grew up in the AG but do not remember much about teaching on sanctification other than an assumption that it was progressive and that one could backslide.

Sanctification is realized in the believer by recognizing his identification with Christ in His death and resurrection, and by the faith reckoning daily upon the fact of that union, and by offering every faculty continually to the dominion of the Holy Spirit. http://www.ag.org/top/beliefs/statement_of_fundamental_truths/sft_full.cfm#9 Very sorry to observe that our own AoG statement has very little to do with Wesleyan doctrine of entire sanctification Karen Lucas Henry Volk Charles Page Terry Wiles

It could be because the AoG view is continually progressive. Positionally, we are sanctified (Acts 26:18) yet while in the flesh all things are becoming new
Henry Volk
They took out entire sanctification in the 60’s right?
Varnel Watson
I dont think our AoG every had anything entire. CoGoP just now merged it with progressive http://www.pentecostaltheology.com/current-2016-church-of-god-of-prophecy-revised-view-of-sanctification/

I see. I thought it was a part of the lingo at least

Warren D Combs did a great work in the 1976 PENTECOSTAL CATECHISM:
What we believe about : Salvation —
Water Baptism —
The Baptism in the Holy Ghost —
Sanctification —
Worldiness —
The Second coming of Christ (Rapture) —
The Second coming of Christ (the Revelation) —
Divine healing —
Eternal security —
Hell —
Heaven

It’s a good resource, if you can still find it.

Very expensive on Amazon.

I picked up a copy for about 20 a couple months ago. They’ve seem to have gone up quite a bit since then.

It sells on ebay. Also, Wesley’s Revision of the Shorter Catechism calls from entire sanctification from original sin which it calls “inbred sin” Charles Page Till you press the believer to expect full salvation now, you must not look for revival https://books.google.com/books?id=D9wrAAAAYAAJ&dq=PENTECOSTAL+CATECHISM&q=sanctification#v=onepage&q=entire&f=false

Thanks!

AOG does not rightly divide justification from sanctification; so discussion and understanding is at cross purposes.
Varnel Watson
I’ve tried to explain that they actually do when it comes to HS baptism – cannot be done with unclean heart RichardAnna Boyce http://www.pentecostaltheology.com/assemblies-of-god-too-believe-in-entire-sanctification/
