Gal. 4:4 “But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,” KJV

HE WAS

“Made under the law,” KJV

Matthew & Luke, So beautifully narrates his entrance to this world. We call it the Christmas story.

He grew up subject to the law, obedient to the law. On the 1st Sabbath after his 12th birthday he was taken to the synagogue where he became the, “son of the law”.

He passed from boyhood to manhood.

By the time we reach Matthew chapter 16, He had chosen his disciples and everything was on time. Jesus meets with his Disciples on Mt. Philippi, at base of Mt. Harmon.

I’m not sure, I would have chosen the ones he chose for my disciples, Peter the hot tempered Jew, in the garden with a knife, he would strike the servant’s ear. And then we see Thomas, who was called the doubter. What about Simon the Zealot, today he would be considered a terrorist. And then there is Mathew, the crooked politician.

NOW, How would these look on my resume?

When we reach Matthew 16, Jesus meets with his disciples on Mt. Harmon.

According, to Jameson, Fausett & Brown. On this mountain, was a cave with the idol dedicated to pan, god of the shepherds.

Now the shepherd of all shepherds is meeting with his closest men.

It is here on this mountain that Jesus reflects and asks the question? 13 “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?”
14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
Who does the world think I am?”

Now Jesus is addressing Peter,

Matthew 16: 18 “ And I say unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” KJV

Verse 14)” WHO DOES THE WORLD THANK I AM?”

Some thought He was John Baptist back from the grave, some say, Elias has reappeared, for Malachi 4:7 spoke of Elias returning. Yet others believe he is Jeremiah, for Jesus often was found weeping as Jeremiah did. Or he just might be another prophet of old.

Verse 16) “WHO DO YOU THINK I AM?”

PETER THE SPOKESMAN REPLIES.

Verse 16) “Tho art the Christ.”

Now Jesus speaks to Peter.

“Tho art Peter” {pet-ros} (?????) (4074) piece of rock, small.
Arndt & Gingrich {small pebble or piece of rock}.

“Upon this rock” {petra}( ??????) , (4073) large immovable stone .
1 Cor. 10:4 describing Jesus Christ, which reads: “They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.”

Deut. 32:3 Refers to Christ as our rock.
Psm. 71:3 David thou art my Rock, my refuge.
Isa. 26:4 My Rock eternal.
Eph. 2:20 The chief corner stone.

Three centuries later it was this scripture that gave birth to the cardinal doctrine of Peter being the 1st Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. (Later we will cover this)

“I will build my church.”

BUILD, (?????????) {oiko-domeo} (3618)
Erect from the bottom, Build from the foundation up.

Isaiah 28:16 calls him the, “Foundation stone of the church”

“I will build my church.”

Not a building, Not a Organization, Not a denomination.

This early church did not develop buildings until around 200 years later. Denominations, liturgies, clerical garments and hierarchy, was not developed until the 2nd century. ( I will come back to this in a later study)..

This church that Christ was to build, was not,
Not, (koinania) ???????? {2842} fellowship, social order.
Odd-fellows, Shrines lodges are a fellowship.

Not, ( laos) ???? {2992} people, A party group.
Not, (soma) ???? {4983} physical body.

Not, (sussomos) ???????? {4954} community, Commune for social separation.

BUT, Ekklesie {1577} (????????.) This word comes from two Greek words,
1). Ek, {out} (??) {1537} Our English ward exit is from this.
2)..Kaleo. {1564} (???????) {called out ones}.

119 Times in the New Testament, it refers to the body of believers, Only one time it is translated in English as a church, but it is the Greek word, (?????) {hieron} building. In Act 19:37 Refers to temple, {2411}.

These called out ones will have,
(Koinonia), fellowship, I John 1:7 “will have fellowship one with…”

These called out ones will have,
(laos), His people, Mark 5:24 “his people followed him”.

These called out ones will have,
(soma) A body of people Romans 12:4 “we are members of one body”.

These called out ones will have,
(sussomos) Eph. 3:6 “The community”.

Next lesson June 8, we pick up on,
WHAT MAKES THESE CALLED OUT ONES, THIS CHURCH DIFFERENT?
