Pneuma

The Pentecostal Theology

Aims & Scope

Pneuma is the Pentecostal Theology (SPS). Since its founding in 1970, the SPS has become an international society of scholars interested in Pentecostal and Charismatic studies. T ough many of the more than 600 members of the Society belong to one of the Pentecostal or Charismatic churches, a number of others are involved in the Society’s annual meetings from other churches or merely from university settings. In 1979, Pneuma first appeared as the Journal of the SPS. The Journal became a major medium for the interna- tional discussion of scholarly issues related to Pentecostal and Charismatic studies. Articles have appeared over the years on matters related to the special interest groups of the SPS, namely, biblical studies, history, theology, missions, praxis, ecumenism, and religion and culture. The Journal has cherished an ecumenical and an inter- national vision as well.

The staff at Pneuma trust that the Journal will bring the scholarship of the SPS and beyond to the broader awareness of the academy and the churches for the mutual benefit of both.

From West to East: The Renewal of the Leading

Journal in Pentecostal Theology

Amos Yong and Dale Coulter

Before anything else is said, we want to take this opportunity, as new co-edi- tors of Pneuma and as avid readers of the journal the last ten years, to thank outgoing editor Frank D. Macchia for all of his work. Frank has worked tire- lessly to add to the legacy and the reputation of the journal, and it is in large part because of his accomplishments in keeping Pneuma as one of the leading journals, not just in the fi eld of Pentecostal Theology, but also in the broader discipline of theological and religious studies, that we approach our own ten- ure with fear and trembling. To be sure, we have no illusions about even the two of us being able to fi ll his editorial shoes. But we do thank him for a smooth transition and wish him the best in his other academic and scholarly work. We eagerly await his future publications and especially anticipate review- ing in the pages of this journal the many books that will be coming forth from his scholarly labor.

We also wish to thank the executive committee of the Society for Pentecos- tal Studies for trusting us with this important task and for inviting us to assume the editorial responsibilities for Pneuma. In addition, we want to acknowledge the support of the administration at Regent University that has allowed us to undertake this work. In particular, we thank Dr. Carlos Campo, President-elect, and Dr. Michael Palmer, dean of the School of Divinity and our immediate boss, for their help in bringing Pneuma to Regent. As an institution of higher education committed to the ongoing renewing work of the Holy Spirit, Regent off ers a fertile environment for our own research as well as for meeting the goals of the Society for Pentecostal Theology that Pneuma represents. Pneuma has never had co-editors in its thirty-year history. We are thus thank- ful that the executive committee was open to this idea when it was first sug- gested. We are confi dent that our co-editorialship — with one theologian (Yong) and one historian (Coulter) — will make a strong journal even stronger.

A. Yong, D. Coulter / Pneuma 32 (2010) 1-3

Looking ahead, by the time this issue comes off the press, Brill will have implemented a fully online review system that will streamline much of our work and enable greater eficiency in processing manuscripts from initial receipt to fi nal publication. The Editorial Manager for Pneuma will be avail- able at: editorialmanager.com/pneuma. Online-submission of articles can be done easily by registering on the website (“Register now” link, lower side of the log-in box), and taking the prompted action on screen. The submis- sion process should be straightforward: uploading all necessary source fi les, building a pdf, approval of this pdf, and sending it to the managing editor’s inbox. After that the journal editors will take over and process the manuscript. Brill’s Editorial Manager will also allow authors to track the process of their submissions. We hope this will make the workfl ow of submitting, reviewing and preparing for printing more convenient and will help authors see their texts in print in a more timely manner. We are grateful to Maarten Frieswijk and his staff at Brill for welcoming us, working with us to ensure a smooth transition, educating us regarding the capabilities of the online review system, and implementing the kind of system that we believe members and friends of the Society, who will be submitting papers, reviewing them, and reviewing books for the journal, will like.

This year also marks another first: the transition of the journal from two to three issues annually. This will allow for publication of more papers with a shorter wait-time, and for more substantive book reviews of the many fi ne volumes that members within and other scholars outside of the Society are writing. And of course, this extra space motivates us to invite more submis- sions for publication consideration. We are looking for new methodologies, new areas of research, and new syntheses. Keep Pneuma in mind for each con- ference paper you prepare, or for each invitation to speak about Pentecostal studies. Yes, more submissions and more published essays mean more editorial work — another motive behind moving toward a co-editorship — but we eagerly look forward to interacting with more of you in order to see your work in print.

Having said this, however, we should also remind you that more submis- sions means more referees are needed to review papers and make recommen- dations for publication. We want to thank the members of the editorial board and many others who have served the journal anonymously in this way over the course of Frank’s tenure, even while we also want to express our gratitude in advance to all upon whom we will be calling to serve the Society as review- ers of manuscripts. This is an exceedingly important function that will involve

“all hands on deck” in order to maintain Pneuma’s reputation as the fl agship journal of Pentecostal Theology. If you have not been called on before, and you have a terminal research degree in the fi eld and are willing to serve the journal in this way, please register your areas of expertise in the Brill online review system. It is important that we continue to expand our pool of reviewers since this increasing diversity of perspectives is precisely what ensures that published material is cutting edge and at the vanguard (no pun intended, Frank!) of the fi eld.

It is good to know that Pentecostal Theology is alive and well in the wider theological academy, as signifi ed by the proliferation of journals in this area over the past few years. Yet Pneuma remains at the forefront because of its readers and authors. Your work ensures that Pneuma will be, to paraphrase a Reformed dictum, semper renovanda (“renewed and always renewing . . .”)!
