Nathan Warner | PentecostalTheology.comCHRIST’S COMMUNION COVENANT – P1 – Berean Lamp Devotional 188 – (May 18-25)
“God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:9).
When we take Communion, we are reflecting on Christ’s covenant between Himself and His Church and celebrating His commitment to us:“This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me” (1 Cor. 11:25).
When a man and a woman enter into marriage, they are declaring to the world their solemn promise that they will be committed and faithful to each other. Similarly, every Believer is betrothed to Jesus, “for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin” (2 Cor. 11:2), for “the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him” (1 Cor. 6:17). When we believe on Him, we are literally entrusting ourselves to Him in a marriage covenant.
Like a husband, Jesus commits Himself to every Believer and every Believer commits themselves to Jesus as His bride. “For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, His body, and is Himself its Savior” (Eph. 5:23). You entrust your life to King Jesus when you come under His headship – He becomes responsible for you and you become responsible to Him.
How has Jesus shown Himself to be responsible for you? He “gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession” (Titus 2:14a), “for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death” (Rom. 8:2). He has given you rest by reconciling you to God: “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). By His sacrifice of Himself, He has purchased you from your enslavement to the elemental spirits (Gal 4:3). Now you belong to Jesus, and He will keep you safe from your former spiritual owners —each Believer is “protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Pt. 1:5), “and the evil one does not touch him” (1 Jn. 5:18b). “The Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one” (2 Thess. 3:3).
And though worthy only to be His servant, He has betrothed you to Himself in faithfulness, offering you peace with God through your union with Him: “Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God…and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Rom. 5:1-5).
Yes, Jesus committed His Holy Spirit to His Church, “so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word” (Eph 5:26) —His Word that is the sword of the Spirit (Heb. 4:12; Eph. 6:17), which cuts through the thoughts and intentions of hearts and minds (ours and the lost) —bringing to light Truth and Life. Indeed, Jesus has provided for our ETERNAL life: “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies” (Jn. 11:25). Jesus also provides for your needs that are in accordance with God’s will in this life: “My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:19).
When we observe Communion, we celebrate Christ’s commitment to us, His responsibility for us, and His covenant with us sealed by His blood. “Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass” (1 Thess. 5:24). Even so, Amen.
