“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord…” (Isa. 61:1-2).
Jesus quoted this as His mission at the beginning of His public ministry, and note, Luke 4:20 says, “Then He closed the book.” Interestingly stopping point, mid-verse. Isa 61:2 continues, “And the day of vengeance of our God.” That is not what Jesus was proclaiming. The church age is not the time for that. “He closed the book” before getting to those words. With Jesus now dwelling in us, this too is our mission, and like Him, it does NOT include proclaiming God’s vengeance.
The balance of verse 2, and verse 3, continues: “To comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
Oh glory! This is also a part of our call, post cross and resurrection. He has taken all mourning and ashes and heaviness, replacing them with the Holy Spirit, “the oil of joy,” has clothed us with a heart of praise, and has declared us righteous, planted in Him and He in us, “that He may be glorified” in us as He lives through us.
Now, we too, having been saved, filled with the Holy Spirit, and commissioned, so we to are to return “in the power of the Spirit …” and go forth and teach, to show them who God is and His amazing redeeming love, drawing them into the Kingdom. We are being fueled and charged up for the great end-time awakening.
