“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:13-14).
One traditional interpretation of Jesus’ words here is that few will make it to heaven. And that was once true, before the cross, but no longer. The truth is, Jesus is that narrow gate, “the way, the truth and the life,” and the only way we can be saved.
But, at the cross, EVERYTHING CHANGED. The veil keeping man from access to God was torn asunder. And, JESUS THREW THE GATE OPEN WIDE.
Jesus wants everyone who will to be saved, and the narrow way, while always Jesus only, is now a HIGHWAY TO OUR GOD on which travel everyone who will receive Jesus.
We are now pilgrims on the King’s Highway as we run the race and work out our wonderful salvation into our daily lives, encouraging one another along the way.
“A highway shall be there, a roadway,
and it shall be called the Highway of Holiness.
The unclean shall not pass on it,
but it shall be for the wayfaring men,
and fools shall not wander on it” (Isaiah 35:8).
Who are these “unclean” and the “fools” but those who refuse the glorious salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Believers, you and I are the “wayfarers” on this HIGHWAY OF HOLINESS, not in our own strength, but because He has made us Holy and righteous in His sight, and empowered us by His grace to grow in holiness in our daily lives.
So, LET US GROW STRONG in Him and His holiness day be day, knowing who we are in Him, and being transformed from glory to glory as we proceed together down the highway of our God. And, together, we will be a powerful force picking up many others for the Kingdom along the way.
