There’s a large list Pentecostal bibliography on the subject we will be offering shortly. When exactly is your class? http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2015/may-web-only/imb-ban-speaking-in-tongues-baptism-baptist-missionary.html

Sister there is nothing better to use than the scriptures you can’t go wrong. I find books to include to much personal opinions. You will do fine pray and go at he will guide you.

For those of you saying “The Bible” I think that went without saying. Looking to other books to help understand how to formulate a lesson plan is NOT a bad thing. In fact perhaps the person teaching will encounter some of the arguments of people like Dunn who are against modern usage of the gifts. It is good to have the use of other spirit filled people who God has used to write these other books that have been suggested.

We should remember that the Pentecostal experience came before there was N T scripture. The book of Acts did not appear until 30 to 50 years after the resurrection. The Holy Spirit is not limited to the printed word.

Check out Bert Farias. He is on Facebook and his book on speaking in tongues should be available on Amazon.com. Not sure of the books’ names but I believe he’s written a couple.

If posters actually read the article they may have noted that the quoted comment was by Bobbie Purdy about a request for literature review made last year by @Leah Grier-Lee to this group. Greet recommendations were given by Jon Ruthven Lee Roy Martin James M. Henderson Randy Buchanan and Mark Biteler among others. A great working/study bibliography on glossolalia was in the results. Actually, how isn’t a bad question… as long as the answers are thoroughly Biblical.

I sought the Holy Ghost for well over a year before I finally was able to receive. And that night, He hit me in the middle of my stomach, and I was whipped back and forth like a palm tree in a hurricane… but no tongues. I landed on my back halfway down the aisle, shaking all over… but still no tongues.

Until a sweet little minister’s wife bent over me and said,
“Sister Mary Ellen, The Holy Ghost is all over you. He wants to use your tongue, but you’ve gotta make a sound to give Him something to work with. He’s not going to make the sound come out of you. That’s up to you!”

I was floored! I didn’t know that’s how it worked!
So I opened my mouth and started to say something, I don’t remember what. And it turned into a fluent language akin to Spanish or Italian. And it flowed like a mighty river for 2 hours.

So, telling them how might be a good thing.

Another thing about tongues… we in the Pentecostal churches tend to view them too much as a badge. Like something we receive to show we have graduated to the next level.

The gifts aren’t badges. They are not for personal glory or identification. Gifts are tools. Not certificates of congratulations.

Therefore, a very important aspect of a study on the subject of tongues would be, what does God want us to use this gift to accomplish? How can we as a body and as individuals be edified by tongues?

But tongues could be taught.if we had dedicated “Christians” to record and make correlative analysis of the language. Since most researchers do not take tongues seriously, we do not have this resource and tongues suffer from the criticism and mocking of the ignorant masses.

God does not speak at our will but at His will.Satan imitates tongues just as he imitates other things. But he can not imitate sanctification which cleans up a person and gets them ready for the real Holy Spirit and ready to be use by God because he (satan) can not cross the Blood line of Jesus’s precious blood that He shed on the cross at Calvary when He laid down His life for every one of us.So be careful satan does not fool you and cause you to blasphemy the Holy Spirit and lose your soul forever.

The teaching needs to be tongues on demand or else the class may sit for hours until the emotions build up to tongues. The tarrying may take hours or days and other classes will need the room!

how can you teach someone to speak about the great mysteries of God in an unknown tongue. You can’t!

I you have the unknown tongue speak it without explanation and don’t be intimidated by people who will tell you, you can’t speak, forbid no one from speaking in tongues.

the sister in OP was asking for directions – study materials / books it was pretty self understood what it was It said what it said Good scholars like Jon Ruthven, L Martin, JM Henderson, L Langely, Mark Buttler and others understood the question well and gave her some help. Huh? I say we can teach about it not teach people to speak in tongues. Btw 2 ir at the most three is from the Lord through Paul. The A/G refer to that to in teachings on the subject.

RT Don Watson As one who thinks he identifies with a Classical Pentecostal understanding, I believe that a suitable order for the teaching is: The Person and work of the Holy Spirit, The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit, and the manifestation of the Holy Spirit (including speaking in tongues). You may question the order if you wish. And, with respect to “speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance,” I do see this as part of a Classical Pentecostal position. DEW

at best, foolishness. At worst, demonic. Acts 2:4 “they spoke…as THE SPIRIT gave utterance”; NOT some “coach” or “teacher”.

I would suggest teaching a class on speaking in tongues is unnecessary. Once people understand and receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit you can let the Holy Spirit and scripture teach them.

No wonder when ministers want people to speak in tongues, they wil tell them.” SayJesus..Jesus..Jesus…or Thank you Jesus..thank you Jesus..thank you Jesus” as a mantra to open up the tongue…and release the utterance..
The Bible doesnt says in Acts 2 that they were in one place and a pastor was urging them on and on to start a fire..but simply says they were in one place and they heard the sound…

    • Reply April 27, 2019

I don’t think I have heard of that practice, but I remember reading FF Bosworth say some of the more unscrupulous preachers would have people say ‘Glory, glory, glory’ really fast.

I’ve seen a woman take her hand and move another woman’s jaw to try to get her to speak in tongues.

I’ve seen someone just urging a kid to try to say something as if to pray speaking in tongues out of them.

If the Spirit is like a well of water that springs up into eternal life, then the Spirit can flow. If the Spirit gives tongues, it can flow. We don’t have to try to make someone say something.

I also think Pentecostals and Charismatics in general get way too hung up on speaking in tongues. The Bible does not teach if someone does not speak in tongues that he is not filled with the Holy Ghost. In Acts 19, some or all of those people prophesied when the spirit came on them. Paul said to be filled with the Spirit and speak to yourselves in psalms, hmns, and spiritual songs. He also asked, “Not all speak with tongues, do they?”
