Definitely not Greek-theater, professional performers kind of church, but a functioning servant body of Christ actually headed and led by the living Jesus.
Acts 2:42 The exemplary picture of the early church portrays the ideal interadvent interaction for the Church as well as Millennium kingdom values for Israel—if they would choose to believe in Jesus and repent on a national scale.
The apostles’ doctrine; fellowship (the uncoerced communal sharing of material possessions and the disposition that undergirded it); the breaking of bread which references the Lord’s Supper and potentially other meals enjoyed in communion with each other ; and prayers are the description of an ideal church today. You can’t tell the health of one’s spiritual life, because their foundations are underground. When a storm hits an individual’s or church’s life then you know if it’s built on sand or rock.
The foundations determine the life (or visible building) then seen of an individual or church.
Foundations include constitution or tradition which determine what you can and can’t do.
That is why God raised up Apostles for the purpose of laying rock solid foundations.
Our solid foundations are the epistles, especially Romans chapters 1-8.
Apostles were first in order, before prophets pastors teachers evangelists to lay Jesus’ Life:-
Eph 2:20. ‘having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, We are building the church on the foundation of Jesus, as taught by the apostles.’
Jesus is the solid rock of our foundational doctrine, and the Parable of the Sower teaches what happens when the foundation is not rooted in Christ, but church tradition etc.
Jesus could have built a big church, with thousands receiving his miracles and teachings, but he always sent the crowds away because he wanted to teach firm foundations to His 12.
This was called the Apostles doctrine which they taught to the Jews in the synagogues.
Gal 1:11-12 ‘But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ.’
Then Paul was raised up as the Apostle to the Gentiles and taken aside for 3 years by Jesus, just as Jesus had discipled His Apostles for 3 years.
1 Cor 3:10-11 ‘According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.’
OT picture is of God taking Moses aside up the mountain and giving him all the instructions of the tabernacle, saying make sure you build it according to this pattern I’ve shown you.
The foundations Jesus gives the Apostles will determine the shape and size of His church.
Paul had an immense bond of truth which he taught in detail to all the churches he started.
Even where Paul could only stay a day because of persecution, he preached all through the night, leading one listener to be raised from the dead because he fell after falling asleep, but Paul continued preaching after this miracle, instead of glorying in a sign and wonder. Paul showed his rock solid foundational teaching was more important than God’s miracles.
Free Grace is the only foundation i have found to be non-denominational and hermeneutically sound when studied free of any commentaries.
