Don’t Be Deceived
“16 Do not be deceived, my beloved. 17 Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures” (NRSV James 1:16-18).
Scripture repeatedly tells us to watch out for people who may try to deceive us, but sadly many people overlook the warning. Do not be deceived by a person who is passionate or excited about God. Study God’s Word for yourself. Know God’s Word for yourself. Be careful that you not be deceived.
Compromise of the Word brings disastrous consequences to God’s people. (2 Chronicles 17-20).
Jehoshaphat was not an average, believer. He was a man of strong faith and open godliness who brought reform to the nation. Note if he suffered from the danger of compromising. This tells us that, none of us is exempt.
The Bible does not condemn, everything that Jehoshaphat did. We do learn of his wrongful contact with the world. the Bible doesn’t condemn everything the man did, but rather it portrays his strengths and his weaknesses (2 Chronicles 19:2-3).
Unfortunately, some will hear this an wrongly conclude that God is completely throwing out the man and his ministry. This is incorrect thinking . The Bible points out some of the errors in the teaching and action.
This story helps us, realize that even when persons obviously have a heart for God also have some areas where they are wrong and that if God’s people follow them in those wrong areas, there will be disastrous consequences for God’s people.
Do not be deceived by a person who is passionate or excited about God. Study God’s Word for yourself. Know God’s Word for yourself. Be careful that you not be deceived.
On the day of judgement we can’t use I was deceived as an excuse because God is not mocked. Never put your trust in man, but instead put your full trust in the Lord.
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7).
We are warned, to not allow ourselves to become deceived. Just because a person claims to be, seeking the truth, does not mean that what they say is indeed accurate theology.
“See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8).
