“LORD, our Lord, HOW MAJESTIC is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.” (Psa. 8:1) [Yehovah Adoneynu; the root signifies to direct, rule, judge, support. So Adonai is the Director, Ruler, Judge, and Supporter of men. It is well combined with Jehovah; this showing what God is in himself; that, which God is to man; and might here very correctly refer to our Lord Jesus.] “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast THOU ORDAINED STRENGTH because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.” (Psa. 8:2) [We have seen how our Lord applied this passage to the Jewish children, who, seeing his miracles, cried out in the temple…] “Hosanna to the Son of David!” (Mat 21:16). [And we have seen how the enemy and the avenger – the chief priests and the scribes – were offended because of this crying out; and as this Psalm solely concerns Jesus Christ, it is most likely that in this act of the Jewish children the prophecy had its main fulfillment; and was left to the Jews as a witness and a sign of the Messiah, which they should have recognized when our Lord directed their attention to it.] “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” (Psa. 8:3, 4) [What a view does this give of the majesty of God! The earth is nearly eight thousand miles in diameter: but for us to have a satisfactory idea of its greatness, we must consider it in its solid contents. Knowing that the earth’s polar diameter is seven thousand nine hundred and forty miles, and at its equator, seven thousand nine hundred and seventy-seven, the whole contents of the earth will be about one hundred and ninety-eight million, nine hundred and eighty thousand, seven hundred square miles.] “…how majestic is your name in all the earth!” WHAT IS WRETCHED, MISERABLE MAN; man in his fallen state, full of infirmity, ignorance, and sin? Thank you Abba Father for sending your Holy Spirit to convict us of sin, it is because these visits that we are able to be saved. Were you to withhold them Lord, there would be nothing in the soul of man but sin, darkness, hardness, corruption, and death.] “O LORD our Lord, HOW EXCELLENT is thy name in all the earth!” (Psa. 8:9)
