I am calling for help! I want to take my Bible study to a deeper level. How do I do that? I pray for the proper message and read for context, study word meanings for clarity, and cross reference for perspectives and deeper meanings but I want to hone my skills of study. Any and all pointers are greatly appreciated.

My suggestion would be to stop looking for deeper meanings. The plain ones on the surface are much more exciting than we often realize.

That wasn’t the direction I was heading. I want my skills of study honed. Not really looking to plow in and pull a ruby out of an ant hill just wanting to learn better methods and more effective habits of Bible study

1. Be patient ..it takes time.2. Invest time…it will pay dividends. 3. Build a basic foundation…get a good historical understanding of the time line of the Bible.. e.g.what prophet goes with what time period..grasp his message..this sets the tone for interpretive context…4. Theres different denominations and small churches. Each teach a different interpretations. You want real knowledge , wisdom and understanding and only the true author can give it to you, Only the author of whats written can show you his truths. Revelation comes from the holy spirit. A place to start is to receive the Holy Spirit, 1st priority, doesnt mean you cant still study if you havent received it. Then His word tells you how you can, The bible gives the best answers, Its just that many dont bealive much and take another road that leads to errors, I myself was in much error .: My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;
He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; (Proverbs 2:7) Treasure his commands! as saying walk in righteousness , withou sin etc. Sins hinders blessings. You have incline your ear to hear , Cry for discernment throug prayer, and lift up your voice for understanding, you have to really dig into the scriptures to find that hidden treasure and search for her as for hidden treasure. Hidden treasure is not easily found, it means lots of digging and digging through the scriptures. It takes time. From faith to faith the word is revealed. This is the Deeper Level God tell us how to receive it. Its not just looking around and getting better understanding. Its starts with his spirit , then in prayer then studyng.

1. So you can start with your text in Dake’s Bible for a general orientation of some basic facts and good references within the Bible. I’d also use the NET Bible every now and then just for their fun translation techniques and because I know the people who translated and crated it 🙂 Do you have a specific text in mind? Pray for he actual message and perhaps (moderately often for me) a personal revelation on the text!

3rd – this here website would give you nice commentary reference’s once you have your basic structure of exposition for the text. Barna and Gill are excellent; Jamieson-Fausset-Brown is more of an OT specialty. Pulpit and Matthew Henrew you can just foirego :)The Expositor’s Greek Testament would give you some basic greek should be interesteing in going deeper in the next step. http://biblehub.com/commentaries/john/5-1.htm

Sound wisdom, Sound mind and Sound Doctrine. When you add things not in the bible its not sound. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; (2 timothy 4:3). We are in this times, be careful!

What has really helped my bible study is listening to people debate the topics i am interested in. It really makes you dig deeper when people poke holes in what you believe. It also helps to hear how someone takes what you say you believe down a long path to see where it ends up.

Try reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church and follow-up on all the copious Bible references (and those of the Church Fathers if you have a mind to) and you will be richly blessed and get a somewhat pre-Reformational viewpoint. Some of the 16 Vatican II documents may also lead you well. I suggest you start with Lumen Gentium. ‘
