Stewardship is more than Mal. 3:10
We have just come through a deep recessation and thousands of young adults had to move back in with their parents or make other arrangements for their living expenses in order just to get by. Now that things have got better; the question is what does true christian stewardship require? Who owes whom and what should be done to set the record right? When Jesus said we should do unto others as we would have them do unto us; surely that includes our parents, family members and friends. When the bible said owe no man anything but to love one another then surely that should apply even more to our family members and to others who helped us get through a tight spot. When I was a pastor I often saw real stress put on families because one member of the family didn’t hold up their part of family life. Sometimes to the point where tithes and offerings dwindled because of one weak link in the family. Surely there could be some helpful advice from the pulpit on these touchy matters.

Yesterday I had an appliance repairman for our washing machine, turns out he was a Jehovah Witness. He invited me to visit JW.org. and I learned there their approach to stewardship. They do not teach tithing and do not take an offering in their meeting halls but rather have a collection box for when you leave yet their receipts are very high. It seems that they are motivated not from fear of punishment but rather from a goal of trying to reach every human possible with their brand. Is it working? According to the site they have 118,000 meeting halls around the world and some 19 million attend their yearly events. I am in no way advocating J W but simply pointing out that we all need to think deeper about stewardship.
