Christ displayed some confusion concerning bearing arms. At first he implied to the disciples to not carry then later he encouraged them (even commanded them) There was “not now” “but now” and “then later” There seemed to be alternating and possible interim ethical directions. In one situation it is OK to bear arms and in other it is forbidden.
If the Jews had accepted Christ as their true Messiah then it would have been forbidden to bear arms. Christ would have reigned on the earth theocratically. But upon the Hebrew rejection Christ allowed another ethical value toward arms.
There was a postponement of values previously established in the sermon on the mount and this would lead to a new gentile value system spelled out in the apostle’s writings.
To carry is a disappointment to Christ however in the new value system things would always be complicated by ongoing behavior not consistent with the will of God.
