Stanley H. Frodsham quotes Pastor Swan’s claim to having spoken in tongues in 1875. Swan speaks of great crowds drawn from five states and specifically mentions his wife — along with Amanda Doughty and an invalid hunchback who was instantly healed — among those who spoke in tongues during this time. Simmons said that Swan’s group adopted the name “The Latter Rain” after the advent of the Pentecostal movement. Their activities extended throughout New England states, especially Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut, with the 1910 Latter Rain Convention held October 14–16 in Quakertown, Connecticut. Frank Bartleman frequently referred to joint speaking engagements with Swan, specifically recounting a 1907 tour that included a convention in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spoke 18 times.

The “Latter rain” movement today is heretical!! Alot of hype, nonsense!!
John Kissinger [09/10/2015 11:04 PM]
There was no “Latter raqin”[sic] movement in 1910, but lots of early Pentecostals adopted the name for various reasons at that time.
Christopher Hart [09/11/2015 1:49 AM]
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

“The Latter Rain” actually – a good new topic for your blog
Norman Rice Jr. [12/22/2015 10:05 PM]
Im talking about the movement today! Hey- by the way? Did you see my private message about a certain person in here who stirs up controversy?

Here we go Melvin Randal W Deese wanna look halfaway Pentecostal this is the article for yall 🙂
Randal W Deese
I teach that the Gift of the Holy Spirit was an historical doctrine taught in Orthodoxy since the Church began. Unfortunately, it slowly became ritualistic. This is why I call Pentecostals back to the historic Church to reconnect with the ancient church.

I have Frodsham books. I also have books from bartleman.
Varnel Watson
So orthodox? Eastern or casual ?
Randal W Deese
Eastern
Varnel Watson
Randal W had my share fare of theological dealings with easterners like Henry Volk My seminary professor did a great deal of work on Symeon the New Theologian and his catharsical speaking in tongues though he was Greek. It is important for the Pentecostals in general and especially for those in Russia to learn about Russian Orthodox pneumatology, which has always been the center of theology in the East. Also it is interesting to mention that the influence of the Eastern Church had its impact on John Wesley. http://www.pentecostaltheology.com/important-for-pentecostals/
Randal W Deese
I am so blessed right now. I have over 700 Pentecostal churches who are learning Orthodoxy and are committed to becoming Orthodox-Pentecostal. As the Spirit has confirmed, I believe that we will be the fastest growing Pentecostal movement within the next few years. These seven hundred churches were not solicited for, but they discovered what I was doing and desire to become a part… all since about November of last year.

Randal I think we’ve discussed here with Link The Molokans spoke in tongues prior to Azusa Many of them gathered for prayer near Pecan Playground in the slumps in LA and were often heard to speak in tongues – just a mile or so from the Azusa street mission and Bony Brae Str. in LA http://www.pentecostaltheology.com/the-molokans-claim-to-have-spoken-in-tongues/
Melvin Shomo
I like what happened at Azusa Street.
Many Storybook Bible believers speak out against it.
But what happen is what many Churches are missing today, and that is the gift of faith, and a whole lot more
Varnel Watson
Pentecostal theology claims to be more orthodox than catholic more eastern then western, but then again if Orthidox dont lose the icons the candles and the creeds most Pentecostals will not accept them Randal W Deese
Randal W Deese
Actually, my experience is that these Pentecostals are hungry for the ancient Church..
Randal W Deese
BTW, much of Pentecostalism is still based in Western Catholic and Calvinistic theology – like the Penal substitutionary atonement.
Varnel Watson
I;ve never heard that – especially Calvin – you are mistaken there. But then again seems like more and more Pentecostals approve partaking of the cup in their social time so I may be wrong too 🙂 Joseph D. Absher is arminian
Randal W Deese
Do your research. Where did the teaching begin for Penal Substitutionary Atonement? Calvin! Where are the seeds for that doctrine? Anselm! The Eastern Church has never taught it!
Varnel Watson
At least American Pentecostals are as far from Calvin as it gets. Joseph D. Absher and myself seem to be the last Pentecostal preachers that do not approve of the dipping, sipping and tripping sins Melvin Harter and William DeArteaga though I have doubts about all of them whiskeypelians 🙂 of the whiskeypelagian heresy
Randal W Deese
Troy Day Well…we Orthodox do not teach Arminianism not Calvinism. Those are all novel teachings of the last few hundred years
Randal W Deese
Here is how I see it
Varnel Watson
Well we Pentecostals were present in the Upper Room so it dont get much older than us in Christianity while Orthodox was not until the great schism 🙂
Randal W Deese
Troy Day … Actually, the Orthodox-Pentecostals were there… Lol
Varnel Watson
nope – not in the Bible 🙂 there were not baptists, catholics, orthodox – just Pentecostal – for they ALL spake in tongues
Randal W Deese
Troy Day
Study Church history.. the lines are solid..
Randal W Deese
Tonguees wasn’t the only teaching
Varnel Watson
You think you know more about the Orthodox church 🙂 funny
Randal W Deese
Troy Day
Well, I am an Orthodox Bishop… It helps
Varnel Watson
Love your enthusiasm Start a new thread on Eastern Orthodoxy Would love to test your knowledge there 🙂
Randal W Deese
I’m part of a worldwide Synod under Patriarch Nicolas I

The Catholic Church has it’s own private interpretation of scripture.
Their history has never received letters from Mathew Mark Luke John Paul Peter James and the rest confirming their history of Catholicism..
They have no letters of themselves as old as the oldest Epistles were written upon, no written scrolls that confirms their actual age.
They only have their very own tainted history of themselves.
Catholicism has their very own private interpretation of scripture that is, and has been man made since they began.
Randal W Deese
Melvin Shomo Define Catholic
Melvin Shomo
The Vatican where the outer court and the inner court is, and where they have taken the imaginary veil that was ripped in two and have sown it back together again reastablishing works in their daily Mass, and have created their very own ark of the covenant in the mother of Jesus.
Randal W Deese
Melvin Shomo
Well, Catholic and Roman Catholic are two different things to me
Joseph D. Absher
What for? The Bible says I got a candle in my belly.
Joseph D. Absher
“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”
– Proverbs 20:1
May God have mercy on us forgive us. So sad really. Jesus paid an awful price for our liberty and comfort and strength. I’m heartbroken. Brothers sleeping with women that ain’t there wife talking about “lust is such a hard problem” and ministers of Christ so-signing it. Talking about oh we had mighty move of God but there was no moral change at all. High feelings and maybe somebody got healed or got a little relief or a little blessing, but still loving the world drinking the devil’s cup. A devil for a deacon and pervert for a choir director. No conviction in pew and no backbone in the pulpit.
I don’t know if anybody used the pharmikia argument but drink changes you. The will is undermined. Conviction looses it morings. Sin gets easier and praying get harder. If want to be free you can be free. If you want victory over sin you can have it in Jesus name. If you will learn to draw your comfort and rest and sleep and peace from Christ you will have it in plenty. And there will light in the land Goshen and not the Bacardi bats.
Fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ and tell that old devil “get behind me satan, for it is written thou shalt worship the Lord the God and him only shalt thou serve.” I’m not serving booze or lust or worry or the opinions of men I’m serving God by faith in Jesus Christ.
We need to put P of purity and “cost” back in Pentecost. Buy of me gold tried in the fire Jesus said. or go back to your vomit and wallowing in the mire.
So sad people would rather argue the Bible than pray through to victory. God help us and have mercy on us.
Varnel Watson
May God have mercy indeed
Randal W Deese
Troy Day I suggest you study history some more. Where did the doctrine of Penal Substitutionary Atonement come from? John Calvin. Do Pentecostals ascribe to that doctrine? I have not meant any who don’t?
William DeArteaga
I have a beer once in a while, or wine. Have not been inebriated since I got serious with the Lord in 1974.
Varnel Watson
knew it 🙂
Varnel Watson
hey Randal and I am under Kater Pater Iesus Patros 🙂
