Bill Stockham | PentecostalTheology.comAnd there was delivered unto him [Jesus] the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:17-19) [He stood up to read. The custom was like this; they had in their synagogues seven readers every Sabbath, the first a priest, the second a Levite, and the other five Israelites of that synagogue. We often find Christ preaching in other synagogues, but never reading, except in this synagogue at Nazareth, where he had been a member many years. Now he offered his service (as he had possibly often done); he read one of the lessons out of the prophets. The reading of the scripture is very appropriate work to be done in religious assemblies; and Jesus himself did not think it coincident to be reading these verses after all they were about Him!] “And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, THIS DAY IS THIS SCRIPTURE FULFILLED IN YOUR EARS.” (Luke 4:20-21) [Now they were all staring at Him in unbelief; how could he say this?] “And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, WERE FILLED WITH WRATH, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, THAT THEY MIGHT CAST HIM DOWN HEADLONG. But he passing through the midst of them went his way…” (Luke 4:28-30) [Notice: they were “filled with wrath” the devil hated this revelation of Jesus Christ our Lord, so he enticed the people to destroy Jesus!] “But he [Jesus] passing through the midst of them went his way…” (Luke 4:30) [This was the home town of Jesus, he knew these people and worked with many of them, they did not believe in who He was!] “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.” (Matthew 13:55-58) [Jesus went on to do many wonders!] “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” (John 21:25) Be blessed as you praise The Lord, knowing that EVEN THE WHOLE WORLD WOULD NOT HAVE ROOM FOR THE BOOKS THAT WOULD BE WRITTEN ABOUT THE MIRACLES OF JESUS!
