How are the terms Pentecostal, Charismatic and Hyper-Charismatic used to describe different religious movements?

The typical use of Pentecostal on this site is in reference to the historical groups that began in the early 1900s which emphasized speaking in tongues as the evidence of the “baptism of the Holy Ghost.”

The typical use of Charismatic on this site is in reference to groups which arose from 1960 and on (or earlier groups, such as the Assemblies of God, which shifted their emphasis around that time) which believe they have manifestations among them of the more “supernatural” of the “spiritual gifts” described in the Bible. The word Charismatic will be capitalized when used in this way to distinguish it from the general use of the term to just mean a “gifted person” outside a religious setting.

The term Hyper-Charismatic is used on this site to designate those Charismatic teachers and groups in recent decades which attribute extremely unusual, non-biblical manifestations in their meetings to the action of the Holy Spirit. This would include individuals being “glued to the floor” for a period by a supernatural force for no apparent reason, people uncontrollably making animal sounds such as crowing like a rooster or barking like a dog in the midst of a worship service, and other such phenomena. Hyper-Charismatic is also used to designate those teachings which make vaunted claims that the average Christian can control with absolute certainty his circumstances, including his health and physical prosperity, through the power that he can obtain by mastering certain “keys” allegedly found in the
Bible.

Why would A/G be called ‘Charismatic.’ Originally, Charismatics were in ‘mainline’ denominations, but then many of the folks in that movement went into independent churches and fellowships of churches.

I don’t think ‘hyper-charismatic’ is generally used. How about WOF as a label.

I heard something about Maria Woodworth Etter being ‘glued’ to the floor. She became a part of the Pentecostal movement after it started. That was way back before the Charismatic movement.

A lot of the WOF teachings had roots in the Pentecostal movement. Kenneth Hagin was a Baptist and then pastored A/G for a while.

Did you mean the community church in Roland, Texas when you said baptist?

I wouldn’t classify the Assemblies of God as part of the Charismatic groups but as part of Classical Pentecostalism (first wave) due to their staunch belief in speaking in tongues as the initial evidence of having been filled with the Spirit.

Tom Torbeyns first off who classify Assemblies of God as part of the Charismatic groups to start with? Then which Assemblies of God exactly? If British and Irish AoG are going postmil and refuting premil eschatology they are not classical Pentecostals no more either

Troy Day I establish that a long time ago when first joining this group. While My Reformed beliefs started from the church of my birth, my experience with Pentecostalism started in my early teens at a large predominantly black independent Pentecostal-Holiness church where I experience and saw my mom experience divine healing before my eyes.

A love for scripture developed and later After being called into ministry I would be called to be an assistant pastor of a cogic church and later pastor of one.

There are plenty reformed believers who are Pentecostals and were such before the so-called second and third wave. They aren’t as vocal as the Arminian Pentecostals.

It is sad that one’s biases keep them from recognizing what was always there. That’s just as bad as oneness claiming no one saved but their camp because of baptism in Jesus Name. Reformed Pentecostalism has been around for some time. There plenty of us in COGIC one of the oldest Pentecostal bodies in the world.

Troy Day not all Pentecostals share the same view of Holiness. The Assemblies view is different from COGIC is it not? I’m not sure why we have this need to make Pentecostal Monolithic. I don’t think all Pentecostals are racists because Charles Parham was a racist.

Michael Hazlewood you cannot read. I gave an analogy — i said clearly I don’t assume all Pentecostals are racists because Parham was. So my response was why lump all Pentecostals together when it’s not the Holiness doctrine that makes Pentecostals Pentecostals

Michael Hazlewood I believe in the Holy Spirit Baptism and seen many whom I laid hands on and pray for receive that precious gift.

I believe works flow out of salvation but are not a condition of that salvation. Scripture says in Eph 2 we don’t work to be saved but we work because we are saved. And ohhh what a joy it is to be saved.

I believe in faith healing according to James. I believe in casting out devils.

The biggest issue and Jesus dealt with this — so here cannot see how I can be Reformed. Jesus told his disciples if they are FOR ME they cannot be against me!

Troy Day there nothing to reconcile. I was baptized AME as a kid in my dad’s church but raised in my mom’s reformed church. I believe in positional sanctification which we all enjoy now in Christ. I believe according to scripture conditionally we are BEING SANCTIFIED DAILY. I don’t teach a second work if grace called sanctification. It’s too closely Romanish in doctrine. I trust in Christ’s righteousness and I’m sanctified in Him and through Him.
